Drop Dead Festival, the premier festival for art damaged music finally comes to Europe’s creative center Berlin Germany. Started in New York City nine years since 2007 DDF has been been hosted in a new country each time s from Prague, CZ and Lisbon, Portugal to Vilnius, Lithuania in 2010. A completely independent festival, Drop Dead has always been the front runner in breaking some of the most interesting underground bands, as well as inspiring reunions and one-time shows from cult heroes. It is also a chance for to enjoy exclusive rare performances by many bands that don’t usually tour.This festival showcases the weirder side of art, videos, independent movies and has held workshops and DIY mini conferences, but music is always the main focus and driving passion behind it all.
This year’s Drop Dead is more then keeping up with the cutting edge spirit of its host city Berlin by presenting the most diverse, rich and large program in its long history. Attendees from all over the world are looking forward to six days, three full stages, additional floors with art installations, chill-out lounges, dance floors, international food trucks, vendors and much more. The fantastic music mix at Drop Dead includes electro, mutant wave, post punk, queer beats, minimal, psycho and punk, garage, weirdo disco, synthpunk, cold and minimal wave, ritual music, psychedelic, 8-bit, neofolk, dancepunk, witch house, gothic and positive punk, post-pop, electro hop, experimental and much more. With over 69 performers which include bands, international DJs, and performance artists you can expect to see 6 to 10 amazing bands every night and dance in any number of different themed dance rooms long past sunup.
This year Drop Dead program includes hugely influential and loved experimental band Legendary Pink Dots (30 year anniversary! ), rare Berlin shows from electro favorites Dat Politics and Schwefelgelb, American dark pop of Creep, famous London opera master London Ernesto Tomasini is presenting his new queer avant garde music project, in celebration of NDW heroes Malaria we also have a very special show from one and only Bettina Köster, Italian wave pioneers Neon, Ritual music of French Unison, Butterclock and off and American Modern Witch and King Dude and Italian/ German Death of Abel, breakthrough synthpuk, chiptune and experimental electronics of American Birth! and Sewn Leather, Danish Bitluder and Lithuanian Vilkduja ; Complete madness of Else Admire Disco Solution (DE), and Harry Merry (Netherlands) French post punk/wave legends Charles De Goal, Exclusive appearances from some of the best new bands Phoenix Catscratch from Athens and 13th moon from Japan, Minamal wave /no wave clash of Die Selektion (Germany), two leading current coldwave post punk bands of Soviet Soviet (Italy) and Wieże Fabryk (Polad). And getting back to the darker DDF rutes special shows from Kombat Katz(Sweeden), Los Carniceros del Norte(Spain), Zombina and the Skeletones(UK)At the DDF you can also enjoy the most innovate current Berlin bands and DJs with performances from Jemek Jemowit, Petra Flurr, Noisy Pig, Berlin top DJ team Sick Girls, Ania et le Programmeur, bloodygrave & die lust!, Gemeine Gesteine, Reliq, Lebanon Hanover, Mueran Humanos and Berlin darlings Scream Club!
In addition to a big party, Drop Dead Festival is also a chance to learn something. We take this opportunity to include workshops, art exhibits, network sessions, and movie showings. Not only is this meant to be a celebration of culture, it’s also the biggest gathering of people involved in supporting DIY music locally. We want promoters, DJs and anyone else interested to walk away inspired and with new tools to do their projects. If you want to start running shows, start a band, or do your own ‘zine, this festival is a great place to get your start.
